Gateway builds ice for the Salt Lake City Olympic games.
Gateway was selected to construct the temporary ice surface for the Salt Lake City Olympic opening and closing ceremony as well as the Olympic Speed skating oval which is to this day the fastest ice on the planet.
A few of Gateway’s more unique projects:
Mystery Alaska Movie
In 1998 Gateway Mechanical was approached by the producers of Mystery Alaska to build a curved ice pathway for the movie set in Canmore, Alberta. An unexpected warm front had melted all the natural ice surfaces and they needed a solution quick. Gateway deployed a large (280 Tonn) portable ammonia system and was able to build a custom ice path within 10 days.
Portable Ice Rink
Gateway designed and built the largest portable ice rink refrigeration system in the world. Contained in a 53′ highway trailer this ammonia refrigeration system had a 280-ton capacity and used three Vilter 548XL compressors, an Alfa Laval plate heat exchanger and a BAC evaporative condenser. This system was used twice in Japan for NHL games.
Batman and Robin Movie
Gateway was asked to provide temporary ice in one of Warner Brothers’ studios for the infamous villain “Mr Freeze”. A large soundstage became a rink complete with iced stairway, upper deck and curved wall. The ice was made with pure water to make it crystal clear and the Warner Brothers art department painted the ice to look like real marble.
